Most people wait until they’re “good enough” to put something out there. Until everything feels right and safe. Until what they know feels big enough.

A lot of the time, that waiting is what keeps people away. If you’ve never tried something, you’re probably not chasing a perfect performance anyway. What feels better is when the whole thing seems doable and low pressure, when you get that you’re allowed to just show up and take part, no prerequisites.

We’re Johanne and Michelle. We work for 99active in Leipzig, and we’re the people on the ground for anyone who wants to turn a good idea into a real format: workshops, creative get-togethers, trying stuff together and actually being there for it. Not remote, not faceless. Actual people, their ideas, and what can really happen here.

Pretty quickly we knew we didn’t only want to help others take the first step. We wanted to take one ourselves.

So we ran a collage workshop.

Smallish, nothing fancy. More our speed: bright, loose, creative, relaxed. One table covered in nice paper, scraps worth cutting up, pens, scissors, glue, whatever you need to just begin. Collage is our way to get out of our heads for a bit, mess with color and texture, and glue random pieces into something that’s yours. Messy, playful, personal, wide open. That’s the draw for us.

We set it up, made collages, played around, laughed, made a mess. We filmed and photographed it too. Not to puff it up into something bigger than it was, but to show what this kind of thing actually feels like.

Trust doesn’t only come from what you say. It comes when something feels real in your hands. When people can see how easy a start is allowed to be, and how little it can take for an idea to turn into an actual moment.

Everything has a first time. Everyone who looks confident doing something now started out clumsy once. When you’re young, your résumé often looks empty. Not because you’re empty, but because a lot of life is still ahead of you. You need people who’ll meet you with trust instead of only grading how polished you are, and who care about what you might grow into.

The curious ones start sooner. Small, simple, brave. Imperfect but real, and that’s what people remember.

That’s the kind of start we care about at 99active. We want a host community that’s actually alive: in Leipzig and outside it too, with people who don’t shelve their ideas until everything looks perfect, who start and figure out the rest on the way.

We care about who’s behind the idea. What they like doing. What they want to put out into the world. Where they could use a hand. What should feel easy. What works locally. How a rough idea becomes something others actually want to join.

This workshop was never just a one-off for us. It was a straight-up example of what we want 99active to stand for: real formats need real first steps. Not slick, not hyped, but honest enough that someone else might actually want to give it a go themselves.
